Telapak Relief Efforts in Full Swing at Merapi Volcano, Java, Indonesia
Conducting relief efforts in the wake of a series of volcanic eruptions.
Telapak staff and members have been working long days/nights conducting relief efforts in the wake of the series of volcanic eruptions from Mt. Merapi and flood relief due to the earthquake and resulting tsunami off Western Sumatra. Skoll Foundation has approved an emergency grant in support of Telapak’s efforts.
Telapak, a Skoll grantee, has major forest protection operations in the Merapi area, but is now involved in evacuation efforts, logistics and equipment provision, and cleanup. Their Yogyakarta cooperative now serves as a refugee camp for 3,000 people. Total people living within the 20 km zone around the volcano number 278,000, more than 230,000 of them are now in refugee camps across Java. The nature of the volcano is unpredictable, and further eruptions are very possible. Telapak is expanding their fleet 4WDs to evacuate villagers and transport relief materials, and provide food and housing assistance for the refugee camp. Telapak will also be rebuilding their nursery and other operations damaged by the eruptions.
